SUZUKI will unveil the new generation GYPSY SUV at the 2017 Tokyo Auto Salon. It is expected that the GYPSY SUV will also make its way to Indian market. In fact, India is also likely to serve as an export hub for select international markets. If media reports are to be believed, the SUV will be launched in India as new maruti GYPSY 2018. The Japanese automaker will launch the two doors and a short wheelbase version of the SUV, but India-spec model will have an extended wheelbase and four doors.
Maruti is likely to use the GYPSY brand for the vehicle in order to monetisation on the brand’s popularity among buyers. It was speculated that the new model will be based on Suzuki’s new generation platform; that didn’t happen. The new Maruti Gypsy will be developed on the body-on-frame architecture. However, this platform will be modified to accommodate new engines and styling. Going by the leaked images, it is visible that the new off-roader will get boxy-styling and upright front fascia with large grille and round shaped headlights.
The SUV will get squared-off wheel arches, bigger alloy wheels and sporty rear profile. The spyshots suggest that the SUV will look like a smaller version of the Mercedes G-Class and Land Rover Defender. Inside, the SUV is likely to get retro-modern design. It will sport an all-new dashboard with new AC vents, steering wheel and new buttons. The top-end model will be equipped with Suzuki’s Smartplay infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
In India, the SUV is expected to be powered by a 1.0-litre Boosterjet petrol engine that also powers the Baleno RS. The company could also use the new 1.5-litre M15 petrol engine, which will also power the upcoming Ciaz and S-Cross facelifts. The next-generation SUV will also get Suzuki’s All Grip Pro system. In India, the new Gypsy will rival the Mahindra Thar and Mahindra Bolero
